EIC STEP Scale Up – €10–30 million equity for deep-tech companies raising a large funding round

Horizon Europe · European Innovation Council (EIC) · STEP (Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform)

Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο Καινοτομίας (EIC) – επενδύσεις μέσω του Ταμείου του EIC (European Innovation Council – investments through the EIC Fund)

In plain words

Equity of €10–30 million from the EIC Fund for fast-growing digital/deep-tech, clean-tech or biotech companies raising a round of roughly €50–150 million. It is not a grant: the EIC becomes a shareholder alongside other investors. It only suits the few companies that already have investors lined up for the round.

Who can apply

A single company (start-up, SME or small mid-cap with up to 499 staff) based in an EU Member State or associated country (Greece is eligible), in digital/deep tech, clean and resource-efficient tech, or biotech. An investor can also apply on the company's behalf.

What it pays for

An equity stake to help close a large funding round to scale up the company, plus strategic support. Companies that meet the criteria but are not funded get a STEP Seal.

Research notes: Call HORIZON-EIC-2026-STEP (EIC Work Programme 2026): opened 06/11/2025; cut-offs 11 Feb, 6 May, 9 Sep and 25 Nov 2026 at 17:00 CET; 'closes' = the next (last 2026) cut-off. Indicative 2026 budget €300M; equity only, €10M–€30M per company, for rounds of about €50–150M. The investor requirements (e.g. a qualified investor covering at least 20% of the round, pre-commitments of 3–5× the EIC investment) are worded unclearly on the EIC page and could not be confirmed in the full Work Programme text. The Work Programme allows cut-offs to move by up to 2 months. A separate STEP Scale Up Defence call (€100M, closing 28/10/2026) is not listed. Realistic only for Greek companies already raising a large round.
