Do you need a consultant? When, and how to choose one

You can file simple applications yourself. For large projects, the Development Law or competitively ranked calls, a good consultant makes a real difference.

How they usually charge

Most charge in three parts: a fee to prepare the file, a percentage of the approved budget if you’re approved, and a fee for implementation through to payment. Always ask for a written quote with every amount. In some programmes the consultant’s fee is itself an eligible cost.

Ask before you sign

  • Have you applied to this exact programme? How many were approved?
  • What do you charge, when, and what happens if I’m rejected?
  • Who submits, and with whose login?
  • Do you also handle implementation through to payment?
  • Be wary of anyone promising “guaranteed approval” or asking for a large deposit without a contract.
